The
Learning Resource Center (LRC) was
chartered September 1996 by Mrs. Beth Nougaim,
Mrs. Maha Helali and Dr. Nasser Loza, with the
aim of providing diagnostic and educational
services to children and adolescents, who are
experiencing learning difficulties and/or developmental
problems. We also provide support to families
in accepting and dealing with their child’s
difficulties.
The
Center is designed to appear like an ordinary
family house, a small garden with play equipment,
to purposefully provide a comfortable atmosphere
to the children.
We provide assessments, consultations, specialized
therapies, and in-service training for schools
and/or parents.
Assessments
Our multi-disciplinary assessment approach provides
a comprehensive evaluation by certified professionals
and produces information about the child’s
development and learning abilities. Our approach
also considers questions posed by parents and
schools, and tailors an individual evaluation
for each child which addresses these questions.
The
test batteries may include assessments of cognition,
language, memory, academic skills, personal
self-care skills, sensory integration and motor
development, and any special needs. The assessment
culminates in a parent conference and a report
including detailed recommendations and a plan
of action.
Academic
Support
We provide trained, caring and supportive tutors
who motivate the children to learn. An Individual
Educational Plan (IEP) is set for each child
to meet his needs. Our plans capitalize on the
children’s strengths, teaching them learning
strategies and skills, providing academic and
emotional support to build their self- confidence
and self-esteem. We assist children having difficulties
with:
- Developing
Language,
- Gross/fine
motor skills,
-
Learning to read, write or solve mathematical
problems,
-
Developing appropriate social skills
Psychotherapy
We provide individual counseling for children,
parents and families.
Physio/Occupational Therapy
We provide small group or individual sessions
to address problems in fine and/or gross motor
skills and sensory integration.
Speech
& Language Therapy
We provide:
-
Small
group or individual sessions to address problems
in speech, language, voice or fluency (in
English, Arabic, French or German.)
-
Parent/child interaction using video to facilitate
language learning within the home setting.
Professional
Training & Parent Education
We offer seminars, courses, and workshops to
schools, parents, professionals and individuals
about developmental/learning disabilities, teaching
techniques and effective discipline.
School
Consultation
We provide consultation to schools to determine
their needs and priorities. We also assist in
setting goals and formalizing referral and identification
processes for students experiencing an academic
or behavior difference.
All in formation regarding the children, whether
written or given verbally, is strictly confidential
and would not be released to any person or agency
without the parent’s prior written consent.
Our staff represents a variety of disciplines
such as physicians, psychologists, occupational
therapists, physiotherapists, speech & language
pathologists, and educational specialists.
We
are proud to offer quality services with certified
and/or licensed professionals, who work together
to offer a multi-disciplinary approach to assist
children, their families and schools.
If
needed, we can refer you to consultant physicians
whom we have found to be sensitive to the needs
of children who have a wide range of learning
difficulties. If you wish we can arrange appointments
with them for your child through the Center.
